Tattoo removal cost calculator
What you'll pay comes down to two numbers: the price per session, and how many sessions your tattoo needs. This estimates both. Session count comes from six Kirby-Desai inputs with a picosecond-era correction; the cost range comes from local clinic pricing. The output is a range, not a number; the low and high bounds are not a confidence interval, they reflect two readings of how much the 2009 predictions shrink with modern devices. It is a starting point for the consultation, not a substitute for it, and not a quote. For multiple tattoos, calculate each separately.

Score above 15. Consultation first.
Your inputs put the tattoo outside the range this calculator can responsibly estimate. Per the scale’s authors (Kirby & Desai, 2009), tattoos scoring above 15 points may be difficult to remove and should be assessed in person to decide whether laser removal is the method of choice. The calculator surfaces this rather than a session-count range so the consultation isn’t displaced.
What to bring to the consultation
- Photos of the tattoo at neutral lighting, with a coin or finger for scale
- Any prior treatment history: laser, dermabrasion, surgery, or topical fade attempts
- Notes on how your skin responds to sun, scarring, or pigment changes
If you already see a dermatologist or laser clinician, bringing this score to that consultation is the same next step.

Quick answers before the consultation
How much does laser tattoo removal cost per session?
Published per-session prices nationally run $131 to $202 for an extra-small tattoo and $333 to $746 for an extra-large piece. Those are 20th-to-80th-percentile ranges from clinics’ public pricing pages as of Jul 12, 2026, not quotes. The national cost page has the full per-session table by size; the calculator above localizes the range where we track your city.
How many sessions does tattoo removal take?
The Kirby-Desai validation cohort averaged just under ten sessions, with a full range of 3 to 20. Where your tattoo lands depends on the six factors the calculator scores: skin type, body location, ink colors, ink amount, scarring, and layering. That spread is why the output is a range; the methodology page walks through the math.
How long does the whole process take?
Sessions sit six to eight weeks apart at most clinics, so a ten-session course runs roughly a year to a year and a half. Why sessions are spaced that far apart covers the biology and the evidence behind the interval.
Is this estimate a quote?
No. It’s a starting point built from a published clinical scoring system and clinics’ public prices, and it can’t see your specific tattoo. A consultation is where candidacy, laser choice, and an actual price get settled. Bring the estimate and ask where your tattoo differs, and why.
